Christian Bale is known for his insane levels of commitment to his roles. For example, for his lead role as a factory worker in The Machinist (2004), he underwent an extreme physical transformation, shedding around 25 kilos to fit the part. Later, he rapidly gained roughly 100 lbs of muscle for Batman Begins (2005). For The Fighter (2010), he again drastically lost weight to portray his character as a drug-addict. He's bringing the same level of commitment to his role in his upcoming film, The Bride!
In a recent Interview with Entertainment Weekly, Christian Bale revealed that he endured a six-hour makeup session every day in an effort to become Frankenstein’s monster for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, where he stars alongside Jessie Buckley. This reimagined version of the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein serves as another example of Bale's dedication towards his craft.
He explained how he stayed sane during the six hour make-up process foe The Bride! “I would scream like crazy, every day. Just to [release the] despair, all of that restraint that you have to display when you’re sitting still for that long.”
Bale revealed that he abstained from screaming while driving or being alone to maintain safety and his reputation. Although, once he began the practice on set, it inspired the rest of the cast and crew. At the end of the production, Bale's makeup trailer became a hub for stress relief, with upwards of 30 crew members gathered there to scream simultaneously.
Buckley underwent the makeup session for about an hour and a half for her changeover into the Bride.
The mystery crime film, written, co-produced, and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, is set to premiere in the United States through Warner Bros on March 6, 2026.
