Children tend to believe what happens in films are real. At least, this applies to the late Catherine O'Hara's character in Home Alone. The actor, who passed away the other day, is known for her role as a mother to a young boy named Kevin in director Chris Columbus's classic Christmas comedy from 1990.

Recently, O'Hara spoke about the impact the film had on children. Recalling a past encounter with a child at a shopping mall in an interview with Sunday Sitdown, O'Hara said that the boy questioned her character's decision to "abandon Kevin". O'Hara said that the boy asked her whether she is "Kevin's mom," making her correct him by saying that she played his mother in the film. However, the boy was having none of it as he asked why her character left Kevin. She tried explaining to him that it was just part of the screenplay, only for the boy to reiterate the fact that she left Kevin once more in the movie. Eventually, Catherine O'Hara had to apologise to the child to calm him down.

After O'Hara's death, actor Macaulay Culkin, who played Kevin in Home Alone, wrote an emotional note on Instagram where he called her "mom". In the post, he wrote, "Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you but I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later."

In recent interviews, too, O'Hara said that Culkin would address her as mother ever since his film with her. Since her passing, the scene from Home Alone where their mother-son characters can be seen embracing each other has been trending online.
