At its fan event on August 14, Friday, Disney revealed that it is developing Zootopia 3. The news comes around a year after the release of Zootopia 2, Disney's highest-grossing animation film ever with a reported collection of $1.8 billion.
Released in 2016, Zootopia follows a rabbit (Ginnifer Goodwin) working as a cop at Zootopia Police Department who joins forces with a swindler fox (Jason Bateman) to unearth a conspiracy in their animal city. The film became a blockbuster at the time of its release in 2016, reportedly grossing $1 billion from theatres worldwide, and earned critical acclaim. It has a spinoff series, titled Zootopia+, in addition to the second part.
In Zootopia 2, the fox joins the rabbit at the law enforcement department as they try to solve a different mystery, concerning reptiles in their city, with the help of a pit viper (Ke Huy Quan). At the Disney event, Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan revealed that Zootopia 3 will bring back their popular characters in the franchise.
Disney is yet to reveal further details about the project, including its storyline and additional cast members. It is worth noting that Zootopia 2 also stars Fortune Feimster as a podcasting beaver, Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Macaulay Culkin, Quinta Brunson, Robert Irwin, Patrick Warburton, and Brenda Song. It remains to be seen which of these Zootopia 2 actors will reprise their voice roles in the third part.
