Charlize Theron is known for not just her dramas but also roles in action-oriented films such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde. In a recent interview, Theron explained why female action stars such as her must fight differently from their male counterparts.
Speaking to The New York Times' podcast The Interview, Theron said that the mere thought of going into an underground parking lot itself scares her. "I do not know how many men think about that. We just have a different mindset, and I think we have to. And that's what makes us interesting and interesting action stars," the actor added.
Charlize Theron said that female action heroes "cannot fight like men," although this is not to say that they are completely incapable of putting up a proper fight. "So our tagline on Atomic Blonde was always 'Fight like a girl,' because it is good and it is different."
Theron added that she does not approach such films wanting to 'outdo' her male counterparts. She then talked about her upcoming Netflix film Apex, co-starring Taron Egerton. The actor said that while sitting opposite Egerton, as he was working out, she thought that she could not overpower him. Therefore, the actor said that there was a need to find out a different way to approach the action scenes in the upcoming film.
"I am a bit of a stickler for reality. When I make movies, I want to know that you can really do something," the actor said, underscoring that she focuses on the practicality and believability of her stunts. "I'm not playing superheroes," the actor signed off.
Most recently seen in The Old Guard 2, another actioner, Charlize Theron's upcoming films also include The Odyssey. Directed by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey also stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway, among others.
