Warner Bros. has officially unveiled the working title for its highly anticipated Game of Thrones feature film, announcing it as Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. The project was teased as part of the studio’s long-term slate, positioned under its “2027 and beyond” lineup, though the title could still evolve as development progresses.

Beau Willimon, known for his work as the showrunner of House of Cards and as a writer on Andor, has been tapped to pen the screenplay for the film.

The film will centre on Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary figure from George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga who first united the fractured kingdoms of Westeros. Known as the original conqueror, Aegon forged the Iron Throne by melting down the weapons of his defeated enemies and ruled alongside his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys. His reign marked the beginning of Targaryen dominance, a lineage that continued for generations.

Much of Aegon’s story was detailed in Martin’s Fire and Blood, which chronicles the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty. The family, famed for their dragons and controversial customs, have remained central to HBO’s expanding universe, which already includes prequel series like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

While plot specifics remain limited, the focus on Aegon’s conquest suggests a sweeping, large-scale origin story for the Targaryen rule. The Game of Thrones franchise continues to grow on television as well, with House of the Dragon set to return for its third season this summer, and HBO already greenlighting a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
