Weapons director Zach Cregger, during a recent media interaction, confirmed that he has a story ready for Weapons prequel, and has been in conversations with Warner Bros about the same.

Talking to Fangoria about the possibilities of the project, Cregger said, ““It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it.” The filmmaker also informed that he had the story more or less prepared before Weapons had even released.

The prequel story reportedly focuses on the origin story of Aunt Gladys, the main antagonist figure of Weapons. While Amy Madigan plays Aunt Gladys, the ensemble cast includes prominent actors like Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong and Cary Christopher.

Made on a budget of $40 million, Weapons emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year so far, and ended up grossing more than $260 million at the box office in gross earnings. In our review for the film, we noted, "Just because the film is A-rated and has gory scenes, Cregger doesn't take the genre for granted. There is a method to his madness."

Cregger’s previous filmmaking credentials include Barbarian (2022) that established him as a formidable force in the horror genre. He is currently working on a Resident Evil reboot, to be produced under Sony Pictures, about which he said, “I’m not telling Leon’s story, or using any of the characters from the games. I’m telling my story that exists in the world of Resident Evil 2. You could play 2 and never know that the events of my story are happening right over there, but they are.”

His upcoming projects also include a sci-fi film, for which scripting is completed.
