Christy, the upcoming boxing biopic starring Sydney Sweeney, has been one of the most anticipated projects in Hollywood, ever since the BTS stills of Sweeney’s transformation for the film were released last year. The official trailer of Christy was released on Thursday, following its premiere at TIFF earlier this week. 

Written and directed by David Michôd, Christy promises to be a gritty sports drama, telling the story of Martin (Sydney Sweeney), an ambitious young boxer from West Virginia who rises to prominence and fame and becomes a world champion, while struggling with multiple battles on a personal front after she gets married to her trainer-manager Jim (Ben Foster), and finds herself stuck in an abusive marriage for many years.

Speaking a few days ago at the film's TIFF premiere, about her intense preparation for the role, Sweeney said, “I trained for two or three months before I had a boxing coach. I had weight trainers, I had nutritionists, and I trained three times a day every day, and then while I was filming, I trained as well.”

Besides headlining the biopic, Sweeney is also producing the film, along with Michôd, Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Teddy Schwarzman, Brent Stiefel and Justin Lothrop. The supporting cast of Christy includes Katy O’Brian, Merritt Wever, Chad Coleman, Ethan Embry, Ben Foster, Bryan Hibbard, and Gilbert Cruz. Slated for a theatrical release on November 7, the film will be released by Black Bear Pictures. 

Michôd has also co-written the script in collaboration with Mirrah Foulkes, from a story penned by Katherine Fugate.  Michôd’s previous credentials include Animal Kingdom (as a writer) and films like The Rover, War Machine and The King (as a director). Christy is Michôd’s first directorial in 6 years.
