Canadian scientist and internationally decorated environmental activist David Suzuki's new feature biopic is in the works.

Montreal’s Possibles Média is backing the film which has a screenplay penned by Maria Camila, known for the 2022 San Sebastián best picture Golden Shell winner The Kings of the World. The producer and writer are in Toronto to introduce the new film to potential collborators at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival.

Telefilm Canada and Quebec’s SODEC are also backing the film which includes its screenplay.

The film, which currently has the working title Among the Uprising Trees, is executive produced by Christian Simoneau, and Hugo Alarie-Blondin and Stéphane Laporte.

According to Variety, the new biopic will recount Suzuki's childhood and key personal and public events that shaped his path as an environmental activist.

"What impressed me most when talking to Suzuki about potential angles is his connection to his father, who inspired his love of nature and the outdoors and pushed him to stay true to what he believes," Noël told the publication, while adding, "Suzuki has a complex relationship to authority in Canada that comes from both his strong connection to the land and a sentiment of rejection from his family's experience of internment."

Another documentary on Suzuki titled Force of Nature, directed by Canadian filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson was released in 2010. It was critically acclaimed and won the People’s Choice Award for Documentaries at TIFF that year.

Born in 1936, David Suzuki is one of Canada’s most respected environmentalists and science communicators. A geneticist by training, he became a household name through his long-running TV show The Nature of Things (1979–2023), where he explained complex environmental issues in a way that was easy to understand. Over the years, Suzuki has become a leading voice on climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainability. He co-founded the David Suzuki Foundation, which pushes for stronger environmental policies and raises awareness about the urgent need to protect the planet. Known for his clear, passionate message, Suzuki continues to inspire people around the world to take action for the environment. He has won the UNESCO prize among other laurels for his work.

The upcoming biopic is expected to go on floors in late 2026 or early 2027, with a theatrical release in late 2027 or early 2028.
