Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3 adds Kate McKinnon as Aphrodite

Actor and comedian Kate McKinnon has joined the cast of the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The second season of the series will be premiering on JioHotstar later this year.

Rick Riordan and Jonathan E Steinberg have created the show based on Riordan's novels of the same name. Steinberg serves as a showrunner alongside Dan Shotz. Riordan, Steinberg, and Shotz serve as executive producers on the show alongside Rebecca Riordan, Albert Kim, Bert Salke, Craig Silverstein, DJ Goldberg, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, James Bobin, Jason Ensler, Jeremy Bell, Jim Rowe, and Sarah Watson. Gotham Group and Disney are backing the series.

Each season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is based on a novel from the series. The first season, based on The Lightening Thief saw Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, a demigod and the son of Posiedon (Toby Stephens), who is accused of stealing Zeus' (Lance Reddick) thunderbolt. He has to fight his way through several adventures, including a trip to the underworld to make a deal with Hades (Jay Duplass), to return the Thunderbolt to Zeus. He makes the journey along with his friends, Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), the daughter of Athena, and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri), a satyr. The first season of the series is currently streaming on JioHotstar.

The second season is based on The Sea of Monsters and will follow the journey of Percy, Annabeth, and Grover into the sea of monsters to find the Golden Fleece.

According to Variety, McKinnon will essay the role of Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of Love and Desire in the third season which will be based on Riordan's A Titan's Curse.
