Wicked: For Good breaks multiple box office records, earns over $226 million worldwide

Wicked: For Good has emerged as the biggest global and domestic opening for Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jon M Chu

Wicked: For Good has spread its magic to the box office. The Jon M Chu directorial starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in lead roles, has earned over $150 million domestically, and $226 million around the world, beating its own first part Wicked and multiple other box office records.

The film has emerged as the biggest global and domestic opening for Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jon M Chu, and has also become he biggest global and domestic opening for a film based on a Broadway show.

The film had the third-best domestic opening weekend for a musical ever, after Disney's 2019 The Lion King and the 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast. The film has been receiving rave reviews since its release, earning $111 million in North America in the opening weekend. According to reports, Wicked: For Good added $76 million from 78 overseas markets, bringing the global total to $226 million.

The film ranks fifth in the biggest opening for a musical after The Lion King (2019), Moana 2, Frozen 2 and Beauty and the Beast. It also surpassed Superman to become the fourth-biggest, three-day opening of 2025 behind Jurassic World Rebirth, Minecraft and Lilo & Stitch.

The film tracks Glinda and Elphaba’s friendship, as it faces a test while they navigate their new identities as Glinda the Good Witch of the North and Wicked Witch of the West, respectively. It explores how their actions affect Oz in its entirety.

The sequel to the 2024 film, it adapts the second act of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, which was loosely based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, a reimagining of L Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaptation.

Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum reprised roles from the first film, with Colman Domingo joining the cast as the voice behind the Cowardly Lion.
