Moana is back into the seas. This time, for a live-action film to share her stories and adventures to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Walt Disney released the teaser for the film, giving audiences and fans a glimpse into the world of Motunui and its inhabitants, first time since its production was wrapped in November last year. Catherine Laga'aia as the titular character was seen rushing to the waters with heart full of zest to save her hometown. However, a much-awaited peek at the face of Dwayne Johnson's role as the iconic demigod Maui has been reserved for later. However, we do witness him shapeshifting in a few scenes. Johnson reprises his role from the 2016 and 2024 Moana animated films while this is Catherine Laga'aia's first time playing the role as Auli’i Cravalho voiced the character in the films. While most of the details remain hidden as silhouettes in the teaser, the film promises to bring back the charm of the animated entertainers in this rousing musical film.
Thomas Kail directed the film from a script by Dana Ledoux Miller and Jared Bush. The film also stars John Tui (Chief Tui), Rena Owen (Gramma Tala), and Frankie Adams (Sina)—a different set of cast from the 2016 animation film. The 2016 film tells the story of the titular Disney princess's journey of self-reflection and discovery, as well as her friendship with exiled demigod Maui to help save her island from the verge of being destroyed from a darkness within. The 2024 sequel saw Moana reuniting with the demigod Maui and assembling a wayfinding crew to find the lost island of Motufetu, break its curse, and reconnect the people of the ocean. Both the films were a massive commercial success.
Johnson produces the film alongside his Seven Bucks Productions partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Lin-Manuel Miranda is also backing the film. Auli‘i Cravalho serves as an executive producer, alongside Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co and Charles Newirth.
Moana is slated for a July 10, 2026 release in theatres worldwide.
