We recently reported that Morten Tyldum, known for The Imitation Game, is set to helm the biopic of Norwegian gamer Mats Steen, titled Ibelin. Now, Charlie Plummer, Stephen Graham, Toni Collette, Anthony Hopkins, Isabela Merced and Maisy Stella have joined the film's cast.
The film will dramatise Steen's real-life story, featuring the gamer and his alter ego in World of Warcraft. Mats Steen died at the age of 25 from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Steen's tragic end was followed by an unexpected, heartwarming surprise. On the day of his funeral, people from all around Europe showed up to pay their respects and share stories of the love they had for Steen. He had left an impact on the people with whom he shared an online community on World Of Warcraft, where he went by the username 'Ibelin'. Steen's parents believed their son had led an isolated life due to his disability, but the support at his funeral proved otherwise.
Tyldum is set to helm the film from Ilaria Bernardini's screenplay, a BAFTA nominee known for writing Citadel: Diana. Current revisions are being done by Hossein Amini (Drive), an Academy Award nominee. Steen's blog, Musings of Life, is used as the base material for the biography. In the blog he explained what his life was with a degenerative muscular disease while also speaking about the relationships he built online. Previously, Steen’s story was told in Benjamin Ree’s Emmy-nominated documentary The Remarkable Life of Ibelin.
Academy Award-winning studio Vendôme Pictures is once again collaborating with Pathé after their work together on the winning film, CODA. Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi are producing for Vendôme, alongside Jérôme Seydoux for Pathé and Øystein Stene and Guri Neby for Neby-Tyldum AS. Vendôme and Pathé are financing the project, with Sarah Finn on board as casting director and executive producer.
