Captain Marvel actor Brie Larson has joined the creature feature Fail-Safe, directed by JT Mollner and produced by JJ Abrams.

The director, known for helming Strange Darling, said Fail-Safe will give a fresh take to the genre with a story following the perspective of a young boy who is disturbed as he slowly learns about his mother's true nature hidden from him by his foster parents.

Writer-director Brian Duffield penned the screenplay based on Philip Fracassi's short story. Duffield is currently directing 20th Century and Imagine's Whalefall.

Abrams said Mollner's Strange Darling blew him away. He called Brian Duffield's script an "absolute powerhouse" and the horror film will be "as sweet and moving as it is terrifying". He hailed Larson as "limitlessly talented," whose inclusion will ensure the film will make the audience "laugh, feel, and care" and will take them on an "absolutely wild ride".

The film will be produced by FilmNation Entertainment's production label Infrared, JJ Abrams' banner Bad Robot Productions and Assemble Media. Larson will serve as the executive producer with Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen and Brian Duffield.
