Screenwriter Juliette Towhidi, known for her works in Calendar Girls and Testament of Youth, has been attached to write the untitled film about The Empress of Iran and wife of the last Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Farah Pahlavi.
The film is expected to follow the life of Shahbanou Farah Pahlavi's resilience and her devotion to her homeland despite being exiled for over 45 years, while mourning the loss of her husband and two children. The film will focus on her love for her nation and husband, after whose death Farah never remarried. Mohammad Reza and Farah fled Iran, following the Iranian Revolution that resulted in the removal of the monarch and the installation of a theocracy under an Ayatollah, an Islamic cleric.
The British-Iranian screenwriter called the Empress' life "extraordinary." She said, according to Deadline, "Rarely has the destiny of one woman so closely mirrored that of her nation and our turbulent times."
It was announced last year that producers Serendipity Group and John Powers Middleton will back an official documentary film and a feature film of the Empress.
In addition to Calendar Girls (2003), starring Helen Mirren and Julie Waters, and Testament of Youth (2014), starring Alicia Vikander and Kit Harring, Towhidi's writing credits include Love, Rosie (2014), starring Lily Collins, and BBC's three-part drama Death Comes to Pemberley (2013).
The Pahlavi film is produced by Rosanna Grace and Nicole Tabs (Serendipity Group), Middleton (Middleton Media), David Clark (Mazo Partners), and Sam Moazami (Moazami Pictures).
