The Oscar-nominated Scandinavian director Thomas Vinterberg will be making his first TV series, Families Like Ours, from Studiocanal.

The apocalyptic series, which premiered in Venice and launched on Scandi broadcasters and Canal+ last year, has been acquired by the BBC. The broadcaster has been keen on buying Scandi content, with one of their popular buys recently being The Bridge.

The series, written by Vinterberg and Bo Hr Hansen, is set in Denmark, where in the near future inhabitants are forced to vacate the country owing to a rise in the water levels. As they flee, they bid goodbye to everything they love. The series shot across five countries stars Amaryllis August, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Albert Rudbeck Lindhardt, Paprika Steen, Magnus Millang, Helene Reingaard Neumann, Esben Smed, Thomas Bo Larsen, David Dencik, Asta Kamma August, and Max Kaysen Hoyrup.

Vinterberg previously made the Oscar-nominated Another Round, starring Mads Mikkelsen, which is now being remade in English with Leonardo Di Caprio and Chris Rock. His other directorial credits include Submarino (2010), The Hunt (2012), and Far from the Madding Crowd (2015).

The miniseries is produced by StudioCanal, Canal+, TV2, Film i Vast, Sirena Film, Zentropa Sweden, Ginger Pictures, Saga Film, and Zentropa Entertainments.
