Sean Baker's script for Anora has won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards. This marks Baker's maiden Oscar. To win the award, Anora beat fellow nominees The Brutalist (Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold); A Real Pain (Jesse Eisenberg); September 5 (Moritz Binder and Tim Fehlbaum, and co-writer Alex David); and The Substance (Coralie Fargeat).

In his acceptance speech, Baker stated, "I want to thank the sex workers community. They shared their life experience with me over the years, my deepest respect. Thank you. I share this with you."

Anora tells the story of a lapdancer (Mikey Madison) who marries a playboy (Mark Eydelshteyn) purely on a whim. In our review of the film, we said, "Baker’s script goes bonkers in a most fascinating, funny way" and that it "makes you traverse an entire range of emotions," including everything "from disgust to laughter to tears."

Anora also has nominations in the best editing, actress, director and picture categories.

Earlier, the film won best original screenplay at the Writers Guild of America Awards and Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
