As director James Gunn gears up for the release of his Superman reboot, he’s revealed that the decision to bring back the hero’s iconic red trunks didn’t come easy and even involved advice from Zack Snyder.

In a recent interview with Fandango, Gunn shared that he consulted Snyder, who famously ditched the trunks in Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel costume. “One of the biggest questions was, ‘Were we going to have trunks, or were we not going to have trunks?’” Gunn recalled. “I talked to Zack Snyder, who was like, ‘I tried a billion different versions with the trunks, and at the end of the day, I tried it, but I just couldn’t get there.’ And I was feeling exactly the same way.”

Though Gunn initially leaned toward excluding the red trunks, fan curiosity surged after the first leaked photos of David Corenswet’s Superman sparked debate online.

Interestingly, it was Corenswet himself who shifted Gunn’s perspective. According to the director, during costume tests with and without trunks, the actor offered an insightful take. “One of the things David said is that Superman wants kids not to be afraid of him,” Gunn said. “He’s an alien. He’s got these incredible powers… He wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler… in a way that makes people unafraid of him.” Gunn said that Corenswet’s reasoning “really clicked” and helped seal the decision.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has unveiled the final trailer for Superman, ahead of its theatrical release on July 11. The film stars Corenswet as the beloved DC hero, portraying his arrival from Krypton and his internal battle to live as both Superman and the humble journalist Clark Kent.
