Director James Cameron revealed that he is developing an animated anthology series and a potential feature film based on the world of Avatar. Talking to Empire about Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron said he wants to expand the franchise beyond its current forms, which include a Disney World amusement park and video games.
Cameron stated that he pitched the idea to Disney, telling executives, "I want to do an animated anthology series that’s essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn’t have expected from that world." The director also noted that "There might even be an animated feature in there." He suggested this could be a feature for a streaming service or a theatrical release.
He referenced The Animatrix as a source of inspiration, praising how that series explored new stories within the world of The Matrix. Cameron believes similar projects could "add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar." He said this would allow him to delve into character backstories and "tangential stuff that happened off-camera," suggesting stories about the first expedition to Pandora.
Despite these ambitions, the director confirmed the projects are at an early phase of creation. "We haven’t done much with that yet," the filmmaker stated, explaining that he is still gathering stories and needs to find "the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it."
Cameron is currently focused on the upcoming sequel to 2022's The Way of Water. A trailer for Fire and Ash recently debuted in theaters before screenings of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The first two Avatar films have reportedly grossed about $5 billion, with the first part remaining the highest-ever-grossing film.
Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash is slated for a December 19 release in theatres.
