The live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic Lilo and Stitch has soared past the $1 billion mark at the global box office, thus becoming Hollywood's first film to achieve the milestone this year, according to Disney Studios. The Dean Fleischer Camp directorial has garnered around $400 million from theatres in the US and about $600 million in international markets, reports Deadline. Disney Studios marked the milestone with a special video where the film’s cast and crew thank the audience for their support.

Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, has expressed his gratitude for the film's tremendous success. "We knew audiences around the world had a lot of love for Lilo and Stitch, yet we never take that for granted," Bergman stated. "We are proud of how this new film has connected with people. I am thankful to our filmmakers, our cast, and all on our studio team who have made this film such a success, and we look forward to more adventures with these characters ahead."

Lilo and Stitch follows a lonely Hawaiian girl adopting an alien, who comes to Earth after escaping his prison. The cast features Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Christopher Sanders reprising his voice role as Stitch, and Sydney Agudong as Nani. It also stars Zach Galifianakis as Dr Jumba Jookiba and Billy Magnussen as Agent Pleakley.

The live-action film's substantial box office performance has reportedly increased global interest in the beloved franchise, as evident from the viewership of the animated original and associated content on the Disney+ streaming platform. According to reports, audiences globally have watched over 640 million hours of Lilo and Stitch content on the platform. In addition, a sequel to Lilo and Stitch is also in the works at Disney.
