Earlier, it was reported that Chris Evans would come back to the MCU through the Russo brothers' film Avengers: Doomsday. However, Evans has said in an Esquire interview that those reports are not true. Saying that he's "happily retired" from the MCU, the actor stated that such misinformation has been happening "every couple years" since Avengers: Endgame. He added that he has "stopped responding to it."

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Evans passes on the mantle of being Captain America to Sam Wilson, giving the latter his shield as well. Therefore, Anthony Mackie plays Wilson and the titular character in the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World.

Notably, there has been an instance of an actor claiming that he would not come back to reprise his superhero character in an MCU feature. Andrew Garfield denied it for a long time before his surprise cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While Evans' role in it uncertain, Robert Downey Jr is set to make a comeback to the MCU as Doctor Doom, also known as Victor von Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday. The film is slated for a May 1, 2026, release.
