The first look at Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, respectively, has been released online by DC along with the announcement of the beginning of production on HBO's Lanterns. Lanterns is one of the first original live-action series in DC's new slate of films and television series, titled Gods and Monsters.

When DC Studios' head James Gunn announced the project in 2023, he described it as a terrestrial-based series, inspired by True Detective, where two of the Green Lantern Corps, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, along with a few other Lanterns, watch over Earth and discover a terrifying secret that connects with the larger story of the DC Universe (DCU).

Chris Mundy serves as the showrunner for Lanterns. He has written and produced for shows like True Detective and Ozark. He also serves as an executive producer alongside James Gunn, Peter Safran, the Co-CEO and Co-chairman of DC Studios, Tom King, the creator of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book miniseries, and Damon Lindelof, the creator of shows like HBO's Watchmen and Lost. Tom King's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is being adapted as a film, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Supergirl.

Lanterns season one is set to have eight episodes and premiere in early 2026.
