Lorcan Finnegan, who has made films in the eco-horror, surrealist horror, and science fiction horror subgenres, is now teaming up with Nicolas Cage for a psychological thriller. Titled The Surfer, the film adds to Cage's streak of indie horror films.

The official synopsis for the film reads thus: "A man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals whose mantra is “don’t live here, don’t surf here.” Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point."

Nicolas Cage, who was recently seen in Longlegs, stars in this movie along with Julian McMahon, known for his role as Dr Doom in the Fantastic Four film series. Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak, Rahel Romahn, Finn Little, and Charlotte Maggi also star in this movie.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2024. It releases theatrically on May 2, 2025.
