The other day, Netflix dropped a trailer for its upcoming limited series Adolescence, which deals with the concept of manosphere. For the uninitiated, the term 'manosphere' refers to a collection of online forums, websites, and blogs that promote misogyny and opposition to the feminist movement because they view the world to be a woman-centric one. Adolescence delves into the influence of manosphere on young teens getting exposed to world views that are harmful to them and their peers.
The crime thriller is a four-part limited series, with each episode being made as a one-shot episode. Adolescence follows the story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), as he is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who goes to school with him, and his family, including his father Eddie Miller (Stephen Graham), who have to deal with the aftereffects.
Speaking to Netflix, Adolescence co-creator and star Graham said, "We could have made a drama about gangs and knife crime, or about a kid whose mother is an alcoholic or whose father is a violent abuser, instead, we wanted you to look at this family and think, ‘My God. This could be happening to us!’ And what’s happening here is an ordinary family’s worst nightmare. One of our aims was to ask, ‘What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?’ And the pressures that come from all of those things are as difficult for kids here as they are the world over."
Co-created and co-written by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, the series is directed by Philip Barantini. It also stars Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, Faye Marsay, Christine Tremarco, Mark Stanley, Jo Hartley, and newcomer Amelie Pease.
All four episodes of Adolescence will stream on Netflix from March 13.
