Joel and Ellie's story following the aftermath of the deadly parasitic fungus, is finally resuming in the season 2 of The Last of Us which is set to premiere on JioHotstar on April 14 in India. The seven-episode season will debut on HBO and then on JioHotstar, with the finale airing in late May, just in time for Emmy eligibility.

In the upcoming season, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie. The official plotline reads, "After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind."

The Last of Us Season 2 will pick up with Joel and Ellie who are living with Joel’s brother Tommy on their commune in Montana. The next season will adapt the second game in the series, The Last of Us Part 2.

Apart from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay, the new cast members include Kaityln Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazine as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, and Tati Gabrielle as Nora. Catherine O'Hara is also set to guest star. Returning alongside Pascal and Ramsey are Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Tommy’s wife Maria.

Based on the acclaimed video game by Naughty Dog for PlayStation, The Last of Us takes place twenty years after civilization has crumbled. The story follows Joel Miller, a hardened survivor, who is given the responsibility of escorting Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of a heavily guarded quarantine zone. What begins as a straightforward mission soon evolves into a brutal and deeply emotional journey through a world ravaged by a deadly fungal infection that has turned humans into relentless creatures.

The first season, released in 2023, was celebrated across the world for the series' writing, story and Pascal and Ramsay's performances. The series won numerous Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and was nominated for five Primetime Emmys including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Outstanding Director, and Outstanding Writing.

Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who developed the 'The Last of Us' video game, are writers and executive producers of the series. The show is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and HBO.
