Maggie Betts is taking over direction duties for Netflix's adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s New York Times best-selling novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, as per a report on Deadline. Leslye Headland was previously roped in to direct but is no longer attached to the project.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo revolves around Hollywood legendary figure Evelyn Hugo, who trusts a reporter named Monique Grant to tell her story. As the star recounts her time in show business, fame and her seven marriages, the book focuses on the secrets and lies of her life as it raises an important question of why she chose Monique to tell her story.
The script of the film will be written by Betts along with Liz Tigelaar, with Jenkins and Margaret Chernin serving as the executive producers. The cast of the adaptation is yet to be announced. The film is currently in the pre-production phase. Liza Chasin will produce for 3Dot Productions along with Brad Mendelsohn for Circle Management + Production.
Maggie last helmed The Burial, starring Tommy Lee Jones, Jamie Foxx, and Jurnee Smollett, in 2023. Her debut feature, Novitiate, was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and received a Jury Award for her direction.
