The other day, Netflix announced that production is underway on Mercenary: An Extraction Series, starring Lupin fame Omar Sy and featuring Glen Mazzara as the showrunner. The streamer made the announcement with a photograph giving a first-look at Omar Sy's character in the series, featuring Russo Brothers and AGBO as executive producers. A spinoff of the Extraction film franchise, starring Chris Hemsworth, it also has actors Natalie Dormer and Boyd Holbrook.

The photograph features Sy clad in a military outfit and on the series' set with a cinematographer next to him. The plot follows a mercenary (Sy) who sets off on a perilous hostage rescue mission in Libya. With ruthless killers and warring factions around him, the mercenary must deal with do-or-die decisions while navigating his own emotional issues.

Louise Hooper of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Foundation fame Tim Southam are directing four episodes each, besides serving as executive producers for their respective episodes. The cast also includes Ed Speleers, Waleed Zuaiter, Ross McCall, Sacha Dhawan, Sam Woolf, Pip Torrens, Riyad Sliman, Michael Zananiri, Aaron Heffernan, Muhannad Ben Amor, Theo Ogundipe, Emma Appleton, and Jojo Macari.

Another Extraction spinoff, a Korean action thriller titled Extraction: Tigo, is in development at Netflix. Meanwhile, production on Mercenary: An Extraction Series is moving to Morocco, having wrapped principal photography in Ireland.
