A24’s offbeat black comedy Friendship is making its way to streaming. The film, directed and written by Andrew DeYoung, will arrive September 5 on HBO Max before its HBO linear debut the following day. The feature first opened in theatres this May, followed by a digital rollout in June.

The story follows Craig, a suburban marketing executive played by Tim Robinson, who becomes fixated on forging a bond with his next-door neighbour, Austin, a charismatic weatherman portrayed by Paul Rudd. Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra, Billy Bryk, Jason Veasey, Jon Glaser, Eric Rahill, Conner O'Malley, Carmen Christopher, Craig Frank, Omar Torres, Jacob Ming-Trent, Daniel London, Whitmer Thomas, Raphael Sbarge, Ivy Wolk, and Meredith Garretson round out the cast of Friendship.

The project first drew attention when it premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section. It was there that A24 acquired the film, later setting up its theatrical release.

Behind the scenes, Raphael Margules, JD Lifshitz, Nick Weidenfeld and Johnny Holland produced the movie, with Paul Rudd, Tracy Rosenblum, Alexis Garcia and DeYoung serving as executive producers.
