It has been 35 years since the original Home Alone released. Since then, five other films have been released related to the same story until 2021. Despite the popularity of the original that has remained a fan-favourite Christmas film, Chris Columbus doesn't want to remake it again and feels that creating such a film would be a "mistake".

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Columbus said, "I think Home Alone really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that,” Columbus said. “I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone."

His clarification came after Macaulay Culkin recently teased potentially reprising his role as Kevin McCallister if the salary was right.

Columbus' directorial Home Alone was released in 1990, featuring Culkin in the lead role as Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old who must fend off a pair of robbers when he is accidentally left home alone while the entire family leaves for a vacation.

Home Alone became a box office sensation at the box office, emerging as the highest-grossing film of 1990 in the US. The film grossed over $476 million worldwide at the box office, against its budget of $18 million. It was followed by a sequel in 1992, titled Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. The Home Alone franchise continued with Home Alone 3 (1997), Home Alone 4 (2002), Home Alone: The Holiday Heist (2012) and Home Sweet Home Alone (2021), but with other child actors at the forefront.

Actor Ryan Reynolds was earlier attached to produce an R-rated reboot of the film which was titled Stoned Alone, but it has not moved forward since then.

Previously, Columbus had spoken having discussions on a sequel with Kevin's son. Another idea that was once discussed involved an adult Kevin attempting revenge on Harry and Marv, who have reformed in the years since they last met. However, the studio declined the ideas.
