The much-acclaimed Hamilton movie, which was released on streaming in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, is getting a theatrical release. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music, lyrics, and the book, and also stars in the titular role, revealed the news during Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show.

A day ahead of the 10-year-anniversary of Hamilton, Miranda said, "We’ve been celebrating all year. But we have one more way to celebrate. We filmed most of the original cast performing in Hamilton in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted. But, September 5, you will be able to see Hamilton in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico."

The musical historical drama film consisting of a live stage recording of the Broadway musical, debuted on Disney+Hotstar (now JioHotstar) a year ahead of its scheduled release in theatres. The musical's original Broadway cast members featured in the latest version: Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Christopher Jackson, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs, Anthony Ramos, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onaodowan, and Jonathan Groff.

The 2015 Broadway musical won 11 Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for drama. The 2020 version was also critically acclaimed and became one of the most-streamed films of 2020. It was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Miranda) at the 78th Golden Globe Awards and got nominated for 12 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning 2, including Outstanding Variety Special.
