Dominic Sessa, known for The Academy award-winning 2023 film The Holdovers is officially set to star as the late travel documentarian and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain in his upcoming biopic. Antonio Banderas is also set to star in the film although his role has not been disclosed.
Earlier, he was in talks to headline the biopic from director Matt Johnson who is best known for directing and co-writing 2023’s BlackBerry. Titled Tony, the upcoming film is set in 1976 around the young chef as he has a life-altering experience working and living in Provincetown. Production is set to begin next month. Todd Bartels and Lou Howe have written the script for the film.
It is to be noted that Bourdain joined culinary school two years after the film is set. He became a popular TV personality with food shows such as No Reservations and Parts Unknown. He died by suicide at the age of 61 in 2018.
A24 is bankrolling the film along with Star Thrower and Zapruder Films. Director Johnson and Matthew Miller co-produce via Zapruder. Executive producers are Kimberly Witherspoon who is Bourdain's estate representative, Chris Stinson, Amy Greene, Lou Howe, Bartels and Emily Rose.
Up next, Sessa is awaiting the release of Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Oh. What. Fun. and Tow. Banderas, who was last seen in Babygirl and Paddington in Peru.
