Actor and newly knighted Sir Stephen Fry has signed on to appear in the upcoming British independent film Touche, reports Variety. The project from director Parvinder Shergill (known for Kaur) is called a heartwarming "family feel good sports comedy drama."
Touche centres on a British South Asian Sikh youngster who embarks on a life-altering journey by getting into the competitive world of fencing. Shergill not only co-wrote the film with Juggy Sohal, co-directed it alongside Leif Johnson, and co-produced it, but also takes a leading role.
The ensemble cast includes Nina Wadia, Paul Chowdhry, Shazia Mirza, Matthew Lewis, Steven Pinder, and Kayleigh-Paige Rees. Shergill is producing the film for Pinder Productions, with Rees serving as co-producer for Raspberry Films. Executive producers on the project include Gina Bariah, Jeevan Singh, and Shams A Akhtar. The film's musical score is crafted by Rowan Bradley. Touche has been made in association with the Knightsbridge Fencing Club in London, suggesting a strong element of authenticity in its portrayal of the sport.
This new role follows a significant period for Fry, who was recently bestowed with a knighthood in the 2024 New Year’s Honours list. He was also recognised with a lifetime achievement award at the Newport Beach Film Festival UK and Ireland Honors ceremony. His most recent major film appearance was in Treasure, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, where he played the father of Lena Dunham's character who survived the Holocaust.
Shergill is also developing another project, Break a Leg, a British indie mockumentary set within the vibrant world of drama schools. Besides writing the film, she is producing it under her banner Pinder Productions in collaboration with Gina Bariah of Harrik Publishing and Productions. It will star Shergill as Jazzy, a determined individual vying with her fellow drama students to secure representation from her dream agent, all in the hopes of fulfilling her Christmas wish.
