Earlier, we reported about James McAvoy making his directorial debut with a film about a group of hoax hip-hop musicians from Scotland. In the most recent development, the film's distribution rights have been sold to StudioCanal for various international markets, including Ireland and the UK.
Titled California Schemin‘, the film tells the real story of Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain, friends from Scotland's Dundee City, who used a pseudo California rap duo name, Silibil N’ Brains, and American accents to con the entire music industry. McAvoy will direct the film and play a supporting character in the film based on Gavin Bain's eponymous autobiography, reprinted as Straight Outta Scotland. Archie Thomson and Elaine Gracie adapted the autobiography for the screen.
Seamus McLean Ross and Samuel Bottomley are set to play the lead characters in the film. Guy J Louthan of Ransom Films and Danny Page of Homefront Productions will produce the film. The makers plan to commence production in Scotland this October.
Meanwhile, McAvoy is awaiting the release of the psychological thriller Speak No Evil, which is slated for September 13 in theatres worldwide.
