Teri Garr, known for her roles in films like Tootsie and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, has passed away, her manager announced on Tuesday. She was 79.

In 2002, Garr revealed her multiple sclerosis diagnosis, and five years later, she had surgery for an aneurysm that affected her brain.

Garr's career spanned more than four decades, and she impressed viewers with her humorous and unique performances. Her Hollywood career started with half-a-dozen Elvis Presley musicals where she played an uncredited dancer. In the early 1970s, Garr took on bigger acting gigs, including some with top filmmakers. Some of her other notable credits are Mel Brooks’ comedy Young Frankenstein and Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Conversation.

She was a frequent guest on popular late-night shows such as Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and sitcoms. One of her notable sitcoms is Friends, where she played Phoebe Abbott, opposite Lisa Kudrow.
