Fran Drescher, best known for her role in the CBS sitcom The Nanny, has joined the cast of Josh Safdie's table tennis film Marty Supreme. She will be seen playing the role of the mother of Timothee Chalamet's character, reported Variety.
The film stars actors Gwyneth Paltrow, and American singer and fashion designer Tyler, the Creator in lead roles. The supporting cast also includes Odessa A’zion, magician Penn Jillette, Shark Tank panelist and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary, and filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie will write the film. It brings Safdie and A24 together after the latter served as the distributor for the former's previous two features, Good Time and Uncut Gems, both of which were co-directed with his brother Benny Safdie. The duo are also producing the film alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Bronstein and Chalamet.
Plot details of the film have not been disclosed yet. It was previously rumored to be loosely inspired by the pro-ping-pong player Marty Reisman. But sources close to the production have mentioned that it will be a fictionalised original film. The film is currently in production, with a release date yet to be announced by the makers.
Marty Supreme marks a comeback to directorial duties for Josh Safdie after the Adam Sandler starrer and his maiden film as a solo filmmaker following his 2008 debut The Pleasure of Being Robbed.
The Nanny earned Fran Drescher two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations. Her cinematic credits include The Beautician and the Beast, UHF, This Is Spinal Tap, and the animated Hotel Transylvania films. Drescher was elected president of SAG-AFTRA in 2021, and, in 2023, she led the union during the five-month actors' strike that disrupted the entertainment industry and earned performers an increased minimum wage. Marty Supreme is Drescher's first film role since the strike ended, though she is also expected to appear in the Spinal Tap sequel.
