Damon Wayans Jr. has just secured a full season for his CBS comedy Poppa’s House, and now he’s working on another new project. CBS is developing Overstepping, a multi-camera comedy produced by Wayans Jr.’s Two Shakes Entertainment, alongside CBS Studios, with Lauren Ashley Smith attached as the writer and executive producer.
Overstepping follows a 50-something free-spirited woman who moves in with her estranged 20-something stepdaughter after a financial crisis. The two women work on rebuilding their strained relationship while navigating life and love from very different generational perspectives.
Two Shakes Entertainment, the company Wayans Jr. co-founded with Kameron Tarlow, is also behind Poppa’s House and the game show Raid the Cage and is developing a firefighter drama called Ten House with CBS following the renewal of their first-look deal through May 2026.
Smith, known for her work as the head writer on the first two seasons of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, also has a background in late-night television, including as head writer for BET’s The Rundown with Robin Thede and senior producer for Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. Recently, she signed a deal to write a feature film inspired by majorettes, which will be produced by Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, and H.E.R. and set up at 20th Century Studios.
