Popeye, the iconic cartoon character that first appeared in the 1929 edition of the King Features newspaper's Thimble Theatre comic strip, will soon have a live-action film. Michael Caleo is attached to the project as its screenwriter.

This is the second time a live-action film is being made based on the sailor man who gains his superpowers from spinach. The first film to feature Popeye as a character came out in 1980 and it had Robin Williams as the spinach chugger. The character also appeared in TV serials and animated features.

Currently in the works as a big-budget film at King Features and Chernin Entertainment, the Popeye film's announcement comes in a year that marks his 95th anniversary. The producers of the film are looking to attach a studio to partner with them on the project. However, cast and crew details are yet to be announced.
