Early last year, we had reported that a live-action Street Fighter film is in development. Now, Sony and Legendary have set a release date for the film. Based on the classic video game from Capcom, the much-anticipated film is slated to release in theatres on March 20, 2026.

Earlier this month, Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian twin brother filmmakers best known for their A24 horror breakout Talk to Me, had exited as directors of the project. They are gearing up to shoot their A24 film Bring Her Back, starring Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt.

One of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, Street Fighter is a fighter game that was originally developed for arcades in the 1980s. Since then, it has spawned numerous sequels and the latest installment in the video game franchise, Street Fighter 6, was released last year.

The 1994 screen adaptation, directed by Steven E de Souza, starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Raúl Juliá as M. Bison, and Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li. Director Steven E. de Souza’s feature centered on a colonel (Van Damme) gathering a group of fighters to help free a collection of kidnapped UN delegates.

Later, in 2009, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, was released mostly to poor performance at the box office. The story follows the quest of Street Fighter character Chun-Li, played by Kristin Kreuk, before the events of the original Street Fighter. The film co-stars Neal McDonough as M. Bison, Chris Klein as Charlie Nash, Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog, and Black Eyed Peas member Taboo as Vega.

Upon release, the Street Fighter live-action film will clash with Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary at the box office.
