Greta Gerwig's Barbie made its mark at the 81st annual Golden Globes award ceremony, scoring the first-ever award for "cinematic and box office achievement." The Globes launched the new category this year to honour popular blockbuster films. 

The film, which set the record for earning more than $1 billion at the global box office, ultimately beat out other hits like Oppenheimer and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

"We would like to dedicate this to every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on earth: the movie theatres," said Robbie, who was decked out in a celebratory Barbie pink.

"Thank you to everybody, all the Barbies and Kens in front of and behind the screen. It was the greatest, most joyful show of craftsmanship and passion I've ever seen," Greta Gerwig said, according to Variety.

She accepted the award alongside the film's producers as well as stars Margot Robbie, America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling.

Gerwig then thanked her partner and Barbie co-writer Noah Baumbach "for showing his inner Barbie girl", as Robbie thanked Gosling "for going full-beach".

Barbie has a record-breaking 18 nominations for the Critic's Choice Awards in addition to nine Golden Globe nominations. Twelve Grammy nominations were received for the film's soundtrack, with What Was I Made For? winning in the Records and Song of the Year categories. Along with two other Barbie songs, Ryan Gosling’s I’m Just Ken and Dua Lipa’s Dance the Night, it was also shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Original Song.

The film is also said to be the biggest film ever to be directed by a woman.

Barbie, which takes inspiration from Mattel’s iconic doll, stars Margot Robbie in the lead role as the Stereotypical Barbie and Ryan Gosling playing Ken. The film also features America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, and Will Ferrell, among others.
