Jason Momoa, best known for leading Aquaman, is officially stepping into the role of DC antihero Lobo for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The long-standing rumours have finally been confirmed, with Momoa taking to Instagram to share the news. The actor, who has openly expressed his desire to portray the intergalactic bounty hunter, posted a screenshot from a previous interview where he described Lobo as his “favourite” comic book character. "I always wanted to play Lobo because... hello? It’s the perfect role," Momoa wrote. His caption? A simple but telling, “They called.”
Momoa has been linked to the character since before James Gunn and Peter Safran assumed leadership at DC. Fans have speculated for months, and now it’s official—the Aquaman star is diving into another major DC role.
Lobo, a cigar-smoking, havoc-wreaking alien from the planet Czarnia, is known for his superhuman strength, regenerative powers, and love of destruction. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, the character first appeared in Omega Men #3 back in 1983 and has since become a fan-favourite antihero.
While plot details for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow remain under wraps, the film already boasts an impressive lineup. Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) has been cast as Supergirl following an extensive search, with Matthias Schoenaerts playing the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hill. Eve Ridley recently joined the cast as Ruthye Mary Knolle.
Craig Gillespie (Cruella) is directing the project, with a script by Ana Nogueira. Inspired by Tom King’s acclaimed 2022 comic series and illustrated by Bilquis Evely, the film promises a fresh take on Supergirl’s story. James Gunn and Peter Safran are producing, alongside DC executive Chantal Nong. Filming begins January 13.
Momoa remains a key player for Warner Bros. and DC, having helped drive the Aquaman films to a combined box office haul exceeding 1.5 billion dollars. Beyond his DC commitments, Momoa is set to appear in Minecraft (slated for April 4), Animal Friends, and Fast X: Part 2. He can also be seen in the Apple series Chief of War and Amazon MGM’s The Wrecking Crew, where he stars alongside Dave Bautista.
