Keanu Reeves opened up on the possibility of working on another John Wick movie. In a recent interview with CBS Mornings to promote his role as the villain Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the 60-year-old actor was asked whether he would consider returning for another John Wick film.
In an honest reply, he said, "You can never say never, but my knees right now are saying, 'You can't do another John Wick," Although he seemed interested to reprise his role once again, he replied that he doesn't know if his knees could withstand the stunts and the increasing physical demands of the franchise. "My heart [wants to], but I don't know if my knees can do it," he said.
"Which is why you can voice Shadow for, like, decades to come — there are no physical limitations, just your voice!" he added. The John Wick franchise began in 2014 with Reeves starring as a legendary hitman who comes out of retirement to seek revenge against the men who killed his dog, a final gift from his recently deceased wife. It was followed by three sequels: Chapter 2 in 2017, Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019, and Chapter 4 in 2023.
The franchise has various spin-offs: the limited series The Continental: From the World of John Wick released in 2023 and the film From the World of John Wick: Ballerina scheduled for a 2025 release. It stars Ana de Armas in the lead role, alongside Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus in supporting roles. The events are set between the events of the third and fourth film.
In a recent interview to mark the 10th anniversary of the original John Wick, co-director Chad Stahelski praised Reeves for his dedication and integral role in the franchise's success. "Could you have done John Wick without Keanu?" Stahelski asked rhetorically, answering, "No, not the way you see it."
He went on to describe Reeves' commitment on set, noting that he is always the first to arrive and the last to leave, as per People magazine.
David Leitch, the franchise's co-director, also shared his admiration for Reeves, emphasising the emotional depth he brings to the character.
"There really is no other person that could play John Wick," Leitch said, adding, "He brings, obviously, the passion, the physicality, and there's just this undeniable emotional quality to him, where you feel for him and he pulls at your heartstrings."
