Marshall Brickman, the screenwriter behind iconic films such as Annie Hall and Manhattan, passed away in Manhattan on Friday at the age of 85. The New York Times was first to report the news after Brickman's daughter Sophie revealed it to the publication.

Known for his witty and insightful dialogue, Brickman's collaborations with Woody Allen, including Sleeper and Manhattan Murder Mystery, left an enduring mark on cinema. His talents extended beyond film, as he also contributed to Broadway musicals such as Jersey Boys and The Addams Family. Early in his career, he honed his craft on shows such as Candid Camera and The Tonight Show, on which he made the memorable character of Carnac the Magnificant for Johnny Carson. He also wrote the pilot for The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence, later known as The Muppet Show.

Brickman and Allen's Annie Hall screenplay is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever written, earning numerous accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Their Manhattan script, though later criticised for its portrayal of age differences in relationships, is still celebrated for its sharp and insightful dialogue.

Beyond screenwriting, Brickman ventured into directing with films such as Simon, Lovesick, and The Manhattan Project, penning the scripts for each. His body of work as a screenwriter also includes For the Boys and Intersection.

Brickman is survived by his spouse Nina, daughters Jessica and Sophie, and five grandchildren.
