Noted director Quentin Tarantino recently opened up to audiences during a comedy podcast about his disinterest in watching Toy Story 4.
In an episode of Club Random with Bill Maher, the Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood director said, "I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I'm a big fan of the Toy Story trilogy. I think there’s only one trilogy that completely and utterly works to the Nth degree and that’s A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."
The now-viral clip had him discussing the Clint Eastwood-starring Italian film series and the success behind it. He mentioned that the films followed a "one director vision" in filmmaker Sergio Leone through all three films.
"It does what no other trilogy has ever been quite able to do," he told Maher. "The first movie is terrific, but the second movie is so great and takes the whole idea to such a bigger canvas that it obliterates the first one. And then the third one does the same thing to the second one, and that’s kind of what never happens. You'll see this big jump from the first to the second and they don’t really land the third one."
He mentioned that he feels the Mad Max series, like many others, struggles to maintain its quality throughout its installments. In contrast, Tarantino praised the Toy Story series, drawing a parallel to the Dollars Trilogy for its ability to stick the landing.
He specifically highlighted Toy Story 3, describing it as "magnificent" and one of the best movies he has ever seen, especially if you've watched the first two. According to Tarantino, the third film wrapped up the story perfectly, leaving him with no desire to see the fourth installment. Despite acknowledging that it might be good, he feels that the story had already reached its ideal conclusion with the third movie.
Currently, a fifth installment to the Toy Story franchise is in development. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed at this year's D23 Expo that Andrew Stanton, the two-time Oscar-winning writer behind all four previous Toy Story films, will return to direct the new installment. The movie, set to explore the impact of technology on children's lives, is slated for release on June 19, 2026.
