Alex Garland's controversial film Civil War, starring Kirsten Dunst, has created a record at the box-office making $2.9 million in Thursday previews.

While it is projected that the film would make $20 million in the opening weekend, estimates range from as high as $24 million to as low as $15 million.

If the film goes on to reach the upper range, Warner Bros' Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire could be pushed to number two in the list of highest opening weekend collection.

If the Alex Garland movie receives a windfall during the opening weekend, it could be the number one A24 movie with regards to opening weekend collection. Ari Aster's 2018 horror film Hereditary is still the top opening weekend grosser for the production house with $13.6 million.

Civil War features Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny as wartime journalists who travel to the American capital during the civil war. The film, produced by Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich and Gregory Goodman, has Rob Hardy as the cinematographer, Jake Roberts as editor and Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow as the music directors.
