Disney has released a new photo for the highly-anticipated sequel of the 2016 film Moana. In the photo, we can see the now-older titular princess as she holds an oar, sailing with an expression of confidence and triumph on her face. We can also spot Maui's fish hook and a heart engraved on it.
Moana 2 was announced back in February where the makers had shared the first look and the teaser for the film. The 16-second-long teaser video opened with a similar setting of a coastal region where Moana lives. The pastel colours of the sky reflected on the waters, with an island at a distance. Soon the scene shifted to Moana, dipping her feet in the sand as the waves crash against the shore. She blowed into a conch shell. A boat was waiting for her and she looked like she was ready for another sea-faring adventure.
In the first look, Moana braves the ocean waters with demigod Maui. Beneath them, there is an enormous whale.
Moana 2, according to Disney, will give the audiences "an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced."
Dave Derrick Jr. is directing the sequel, with music from the duo of Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, as well as Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, who worked on the first film.
Auli'i Cravalho, who lent her voice to Moana, will return for the sequel along with Dwayne Johnson, who gave voice to Maui.
Moana 2 will hit theatres on November 27, 2024.
