Emma Stone's Poor Things received more than a 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on Friday.

Some could also be seen cheering “Yorgos, Yorgos” for the film's Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. “Genius! We love you! Yorgos!” the crowd also chanted at the auteur director behind The Favourite and The Lobster.

Lanthimos lapped up the love and attention, as he walked down the balcony of the Sala Grande Theatre, shaking hands with his fans and signing autographs.

The film is a hilarious science fantasy black comedy starring Emma Stone as a woman who is brought back from the dead by a mad scientist and goes on an odyssey of self-discovery and sexual liberation. It is based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. Poor Things was given an R-rating for sexual content, graphic nudity and disturbing material.

Poor Things is set to open in theatres on December 8 from Searchlight Pictures. The film will next screen at the Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
