Netflix has announced the release date of the much-anticipated Spy Kids: Armageddon. Directed by Robert Rodriguez, the filmmaker is returning to the fan-favourite franchise 22 years after the original film was released with a whole new cast.

Shazam! star Zachary Levi and Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez are the movie's lead parents while Everly Carganilla (The Afterparty) and newcomer Connor Esterson play the titular spy kids. In July, the movie's title was announced along with a first look and release date. Rodriguez shared a new poster for the film. "Proud to share the next chapter in our family franchise – Spy Kids: Armageddon. Sept 22. Only on Netflix!"

The screenplay was written by Robert Rodriguez along with his son Racer Max. The story will follow along the lines of the first instalment and feature pre-teens who are forced to become spies after their parents’ mission goes south. The cast also features D.J. Cotrona (Shazam! Fury of the Gods), Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die) and Fabiola Andújar (Hit & Run).
