The Alchemist, the 1988 novel written by Paulo Coelho, will be getting a film adaptation with Jack Thorne set to adapt it for screen. The project is in the nascent stages of development and is attached to Legendary Pictures and TriStar.
Originally published in Portuguese, the novel follows the journey of shepherd Santiago, who gets a dream of treasure buried down the Egyptian pyramids, and takes a journey to the manmade wonder. The book was an international success and has become the most translated work by a living author.
Jack Thorne has previously scripted Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and also co-writing the stage play of Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Meanwhile, efforts were taken in the past to adapt The Alchemist, with Warner Brothers acquiring the rights. Since the author maintained the script approval and did not like the scripts, it did not materialise. However, the book has been adapted into the form of stage play, graphic novel and concept album earlier.
