The trailer of the upcoming film The Color Purple, a new adaptation of the 1982 novel, was released by Warner Bros on social media on Monday.

The film is set to release in US on December 25 and internationally on January 18, 2024. The Color Purple is backed by Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones.

Directed by Blitz Bazawule, the film is set against the backdrop of 1900s America and will follow a young woman of colour and her struggles to navigate. Actors Halle Bailey and Phylicia Mpasi have been cast as sisters Nettie and Celia who bear the brunt of the discriminatory society.

The trailer shows how the sisters hope for a better future, as the narrative takes a musical turn and engages with emotional sequences. While Fantasia Barrino will star as older Celie, Ciara will play the older Nettie.

The first adaptation of the novel was made in 1985 with Whoopi Goldberg and Akosua Busia starring as the sisters in Steven Slielberg directorial.

The Color Purple is backed by Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones.
