John Boyega, who is best known for films like Attack the Block and the Star Wars sequel trilogy, is now all set to appear in a sci-fi film titled The Freshening. The film will reportedly be directed by Cathy Yan, who last directed the DC film Birds of Prey.

Billed to be a sci-fi romance, The Freshening is based on a short story written by Rachel Khong. The short story was picked up for an adaptation in February while the filming will reportedly take place during the end of the year.

The official synopsis for the film reads: “Khong’s short story is set in a near future where tensions over race and gender have reached a violent extreme, the U.S. government institutes a public health initiative known as ‘The Freshening’: every American receives an injection, after which everyone only sees others as the same race and gender as themselves. But when a street drug hits the scene, promising a chance to see the world as it really is, will she choose to disrupt this ‘freshened’ world?”

Apart from writing the screen adaptation and directing the film, Cathay Yan will also serve as a producer for the film. Meanwhile, Boyega will next appear in They Cloned Tyrone alongside Jamie Foxx.
