The trailer of Monkey King, the upcoming animated film, was released by Netflix on social media on Monday. The film will premiere on August 18.

The animated feature is based on the classic novel Journey to the West, which was written in the 1600s during the Ming Dynasty. The novel, by Wu Cheng’en, is a fantastical rendition of the real-life story of a seventh-century Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who came to India in search of sacred texts. Though the film is not based on true events, Monkey King is based on the first part of Wu’s historical fiction about a monkey who learns the art of Tao and becomes a god.

The cast of the animated feature comprises of Jimmy O Yang, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Bowen Yang, Jo Koy, Ron Yuan, Stephanie Hsu, and BD Wong among others. It is directed by Anthony Stacchi.
